CenterStage - The Mac Media Center is an open-source project set to build a powerful and intuitive media center application for the Apple Mac OS X platform; this project was inspired by the launch of the Mac mini, an ideal Mac to use as part of a home theatre system.
The program relies upon existing iLife applications, notably iPhoto and iTunes, to manage the users content as far as the photo and audio portion of the CenterStage software is concerned. The user will thus be able to easily browse the photo and music collections and playlists stored, managed, and categorized on other computers and storage devices, which are difficult to perform using a remote control.
Because Apple does not have an application suited for video file organization, as it does for music and photos, the developers of CenterStage have also started a companion project called BackStage, which serves to help users categorize and manage their video collection, no matter the media type, encoding or storage method. The program allows videos to be sorted by numerous criteria such as genre, actor, director, etc. CenterState also offers playlist functionality.
